April Note From Our Director

Hello Alder Grove Families,

Ahh Spring…you are finally here. Welcome back to the north coast! Please quell the winter chill with some of that sunshine and evening light you bring…in between the showers that keep the foliage green and flowering.

What a year: Well, not to point out the obvious, but it’s been a whole year of weird. How is everyone doing? We hope that you’re hanging in there and feeling some optimism for the future. I received my second vaccination last week and I know most of our staff have at least begun that process. Additionally, I want to personally thank our awesome teachers and staff who have gracefully and thoughtfully completed a year of innovating new ways to support students while keeping safety and health in mind. What we naively thought was going to be a sprint turned into an exhausting marathon, and I know we’re all very eager to have students on campus and a more regular schedule. We miss you all.

Even without many students around, it’s been a very busy year. Here’s what we’re working on:
– Student council spirit week for April 5-9!
– Small, safe events for Student Council and GSA.
– A safe, celebratory graduation ceremony. (Please turn in your graduation forms!)
– Planning for on-campus classes next year.
– Making multiple plans for assessments, whether those are a shortened CAASPP or schoolwide
assessments (NWEA MAP).
– Plans for “learning loss mitigation.” In other words, applying academic support to catch students up if
they fell behind during distance learning.
– New CTE pathways to provide more career training opportunities for our students.
– End-of-year processes and procedures.

REMINDER: As of this newsletter, we have postponed statewide testing (CAASPP) to May 3-14 as we
wait for the US Department of Education’s review of a testing waiver submitted by the CA State Board of Education. See Stefani’s article later in the newsletter for more details. We will be in contact soon about end-ofyear assessments, which have increased in importance since the data is used to determine our charter’s renewal in 2023. Thank you for your flexibility!

Governance Council: Would you be interested in helping plan the future of the school? We need new
members to replace those whose terms are ending in June. We really appreciate our GC members: Vicki Barry, Kurt Stoffel, Salena Glass, Geri Emberson, and Matt Wilton. It was an especially interesting and challenging year, but wise decisions were made while always considering what is best for our students and our school. We couldn’t do it without you…

I can’t believe how close we are to the end of the school year AND a summer break. This year has, in some ways, felt like five years! I know I can speak for our staff and teachers when I say how much we appreciate you choosing Alder Grove Charter School and working so hard with your children during personalized learning at home. We are strong together and have survived with each other’s support!

I hope you have a relaxing spring break and please stay safe and healthy!
Tim Warner, Director
